After successfully losing weight, it can be challenging to keep the weight off. In the US there is a valuable database that examines the behaviors of patients who manage to keep the weight off. In order to be in the National Weight Control Registry, patients have had to lose 30 pounds and have maintained that weight loss for at least 1 year. Half of patients used a commercially available program like OPTIFAST®.
Behaviours of patients who are able to maintain their weight loss¹:

  1. Incorporate a high level of physical activity – many exercise 1 hour/day
  2. Continued to calorie restriction – average 1380 kcal
  3. 78%  eat breakfast
  4. Are More likely to eat 5 x per day
  5. Self monitoring – weighing or counting calories
